DJ Megha Kawale’s second album, will be launched under Mulgee, her own record label. She tells Bhairavi Jhaveri why her progressive sound needed a sprinkling of desi flavour

Why the decision to launch your own label?
I wanted to protect all the music I have created, and acquire the rights. Working under a prominent record label often means selling your soul to the devil, and I didn’t want to compromise.

Why the name Mulgee?
I am very proud of where I come from, and nobody should forget their roots. The word “mulgee” means “girl” in Marathi, and has an innocent and simple rng to it, Since I was one of the first female DJs on the circuit, the name seemed like a tribute to where I come from.

What’s the music on your second album like?
It’s what I have mastered – progressive house and minimal. As opposed to my earlier effort that contained a few originals and remixes, this one has cutting-edge music that will make any clubber happy. As a DJ, I am known to drive crowds crazy. I wanted to produce an album that captured the same energy.

You have added an Indian flavour to your music. What sounds have you blended in?
I perform all over the world, and it is overwhelming to see audirnce reaction to India. They absolutely love our food, culture and music. So, I decided to incorporate a few classical elements into my music. You will find a tabla beat or Hindustani vocals subtly slipped into house tunes.

Will you be touring the country to promote your album?
As of now, I will be playing in Mumbai at Henry Tham (May 29) and Blue Frog (May 30), I will tour Bangalore, Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Pune in a few months. My album releases in September so at the moment, I am neck deep in managing everything from marketing, distribution, packaging to art work single-handedly. I am 31 and I am married to my album. My life is finished.
